Welcome to our Church

Hello and welcome to St. John’s Methodist Church, close to the town centre of Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, UK. I am the local Minister here as well as at four other churches in our Methodist area.  I live in the town, serving here since 2017.

We’re so glad you’ve found our site and really look forward to connecting with you in person. St. John’s is a Christian Church with open hands and an open heart in the Methodist tradition.

We’ve been loving and serving the people of Sutton in Ashfield and the surrounding area since 1968 in our present building, but Methodist work in the town started way back in the 1800’s and possibly earlier: a Nottingham Circuit – area grouping of churches – was formed in 1780 which may well have included Sutton (Source: ‘The rock from which’ 1979, by J B Smith).

We like to say as a colleague once said:  We’re ‘Steady as a Rock and Ready for Renewal’.  In a world which sometimes seems overwhelmed by bad news, we long to shine as a place and community of Good News. John Wesley, whose love and vision began the Methodist movement all those years ago urged his followers to be ‘the friends of all and the enemies of none’.  We think it would be wonderful if the world lived by that principle and we try to play our small part.  You can find out loads more about who we are and what we stand for by clicking on the national website of the Methodist Church here: https://www.methodist.org.uk/

But, keeping it local, do explore this site, get in touch and know that there’s the warmest welcome at St. John’s for you, whatever age or stage of life you’re at and wherever you are on a journey of faith – or not.  We strive to be here for ALL!  St. John’s premises really are an active hub of worship, lunches, study and fellowship groups, food clubs, pastoral care, practical help, uniformed organisations, community groups and more.  And – not forgetting Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals.  We’re here for you when it matters.

God Bless You and thanks for visiting this website,

Peter
